Submarine Disaster Management: The new high-speed vessels of the Greek frogmen

A total of 4 new pneumatic speedboats were received by the Navy’s Underwater Disaster Management (PN) donated by the Government of the United States of America. The new boats of DYK belong to the category of high-speed vessels of inflatable type (inflatable) rigid hull (RHIB) and open type. They are referred to as Naval Special Warfare (NSW) and are 11 meters long.

Their propulsion is achieved by two inboard caterpillar diesel engines with a total horsepower of 940 hp (470 each). NSW boats reach a maximum speed of 45 knots and have a range of 190 nautical miles. They can carry a group of eight frogmen as well as two crew members.

The electronic equipment of the boats includes a complete package of naval aids such as communication means (VHF – UHF) as well as electronic navigation and navigation systems with surface radar.

Their armament consists of 2 bases of which one in the bow and the other in the stern with a combination of either two 12.7mm machine guns or a machine gun and a 40mm Mk19 machine gun.

It is extremely important and remarkable that NSW boats can be carried by C-130 transports and dropped from the air. Their operational utilization is mainly intended for VBSS missions and novices.

At the same time, during the current period, another acquisition of DYK is being tested and evaluated, the Greek ship of unorthodox war (SAP) “AGINOR”. The latest acquisitions of DYK also include the 4 American Mark V as well as the also Greek SAP “OKYALOS”.

Gradually, the DYK has included in its fleet notable closed type vessels suitable for penetration missions of OUK teams and then unhooking – escape.
