Russia “dusts off” 50-year-old tanks – Is that a superpower?

Russia is believed to be using 50-year-old tanks to seize territory in southern Ukraine, the UK Department of Defense said in its latest report on the country’s war.

The British media reports that in recent days, Russia has probably moved 50-year-old T-62 tanks to the area of responsibility of the Southern Group of Russia (SGF), which has been in charge of occupying Ukrainian territory in the south of the country.

“The T-62s will almost certainly be particularly vulnerable to anti-tank weapons, and their presence on the battlefield underscores Russia’s lack of modern, military equipment,” the ministry said in a statement.

Russia’s main effort remains in Donbass, aiming to encircle Ukrainian forces in Luhansk and between Izium and Donetsk.

Commenting on the outcome of the operation, the British ministry said that after recently occupying several villages northwest of Popasna, Russian ground forces are continuing their efforts to encircle Severodonietsk and Lisichansk (in the province of Lugansk).

“Russia is pressuring the Sheverdonyevsk enclave, although Ukraine retains control of many protected areas, denying Russia full control of Donbass,” the ministry said in a statement.
