The United States has given the green light to an arms deal, paving the way for Romania to boost its military capabilities by buying M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks (MBTs) and related equipment worth about $2.53 billion.
In a move aimed at bolstering the defense capabilities of a key NATO ally, the US State Department has approved Romania’s acquisition of 54 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams MBTs, along with a range of combat vehicles, weapons and logistics.
The package, which includes M1A1 structures, combat recovery vehicles, offensive attack vehicles and a variety of ammunition, is poised to upgrade Romania’s position as a force in European security.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency formally notified Congress of this proposed sale, emphasizing its alignment with US foreign policy and national security goals. With the geopolitical landscape evolving, the move seeks to strengthen Romania’s ability to deter potential adversaries and actively participate in NATO operations.
