On Wednesday, February 07, 2024, a New Year’s reception was held at the Nicosia National Guard, in honor of the accredited Defense Envoys (AKAM) in the Republic of Cyprus (KD) and the UNFICYP Administration, in the presence of the Chief of the National Guard, Lt. Gen. George Tsitsikostas and the Hierarchy of the GEEF.
The Chief in his short greeting, after sending wishes for the new year, confirmed the intention to strengthen cooperation and friendship ties, pointing out that collective action makes us more effective and allows us to face common security challenges effectively and with confidence.
Referring to the support provided by the KD and the National Guard (EF) from October 2023 to friendly countries, in the context of increasing the readiness for the evacuation of their citizens, due to the developments and the war in Gaza, he noted that the KD, despite that does not have inexhaustible resources and infrastructure, it managed to respond effectively and perfectly balanced to the large number of requests it received from almost 30 countries and organizations.
He also pointed out the importance of honestly evaluating what has been done and recording the lessons learned so that they can be used in order to improve, where necessary, the procedures in order to be even more ready to manage related challenges in the future. As he pointed out, collective action makes us more effective and stronger and for this reason the EF will continue to acts os factor development and facilitating regional cooperation in the fields defense and security.
To this end, he concluded, the EF’s aim is to continue investing in the further improvement of the already excellent bilateral and multilateral relations and military cooperation schemes that have been developed, but also in taking advantage of every opportunity for their further enlargement and extension, with a purpose strengthening security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
The ceremony included, among other things, the cutting of the traditional royal pitta, where AKAM of France was the lucky one who found the flour.
