IAI signs long-term MMR agreement with Czech Republic

Israel Aerospace Industry (IAI) has solidified a partnership with the Czech Ministry of Defense, sealing a 20-year contract to ensure the longevity of the country’s Multi-Role Radar (MMR) systems.

In June 2023, Israel Aerospace Industries successfully tested an MMR radar for the Czech Army.

The MMR radar provides aerial situational awareness to protect the integrity of the airspace and protect against emerging threats. More than 200 MMR radar systems are deployed worldwide, including integration into air defense systems such as the Barak, David Sling and Iron Dome.

Eyal Shapira, vice president and general manager of the air defense and naval systems division of IAI ELTA, expressed his confidence in the possibilities of the cooperation. “We are proud of the significant degree of cooperation achieved with local companies: the exchange of knowledge and technology will help both our countries and provide more accurate aerial surveillance.

The Czech Republic’s advanced radars can simultaneously identify and classify hundreds of targets, detect unmanned platforms, missile barrages, rockets and other new threats in the arena,” noted Shapira.

The Czech Republic is increasing its defense budget in response to escalating European security concerns. With a projected budget of $7.7 billion (181.7 billion Kč) by 2028, according to GlobalData’s information on Czech defense market.

The capabilities of the MMR radar extend beyond aerial surveillance, encompassing a range of functions including air defense against aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones, artillery ranging and enemy threat identification. It allows multiple missions to be executed simultaneously, strengthening the defense infrastructure against many potential threats.

In addition, the integration of local Czech companies RETIA and VTU into the contractual framework shows a commitment to promote industrial cooperation and knowledge sharing, strengthening the defense ecosystems of both countries. This collaborative effort strengthens bilateral ties and paves the way for future developments in defense technology.

Israel’s defense industry is heavily export-based, with only 30% of production consumed domestically. The ongoing conflict may affect exports if prolonged. Despite calls to cut ties with Israel, key markets such as India and Azerbaijan maintain pragmatic commitments. However, potential risks include the loss of opportunities in other markets due to political pressure and criticism of Israeli actions, especially as civilian casualties in Palestine increase.
