Does the international agreement to buy Israeli Hermes 900 UAVs with electronic warfare capabilities (SIGINT) also involve our country?

If the purchase of these UAVs is confirmed, then the supply of UCAVs with missiles against land and sea targets will follow, which will completely change the landscape for the Greek EDs in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

Another foreign publication reveals to us in continuation of yesterday that the Israeli company Elbit of Israel has signed a contract of 72 million dollars for the manufacture of UAV Hermes 900 to an international customer, leaving open the possibility that this customer will be Greece, something that everyone wishes and expects of course the acquisition of Greek UCAVs for the possibility of causing a strong blow to the “neighbors” in the event of a serious crisis.

The article states that “the Hermes 900 UAV will be equipped with a Persistent Surveillance SkEye Wide Area system, large payload, multi-spectrum SPECTRO XR, and SIGINT systems and additional capabilities.”

What does a UAV with SIGINT capabilities mean?

The UAV Hermes 900 will be able to operate at very long distances, while it will also be equipped with a machine gun.

This aerial vehicle can transmit data in real time, implementing intelligence gathering and simultaneously conducting electronic warfare missions.

SIGINT (signaling intelligence) is the information obtained by collecting and analyzing the signals and communications of a specific target.

In the hands of the Greek services will be in live transmission, conversations, signals, and everything that will come out of the Turkish side’s communication devices on the Asia Minor coast for example.

It is understood that in this context, the information provided will provide great organizational or individual support for decision-making and possibly the acquisition of a strategic advantage.

The term is often abbreviated as “intel.” Intelligence agencies worldwide use SIGINT in both foreign and domestic data collection.

The Hermes 900 UAV will be equipped with a synthetic imaging ground surveillance radar, a precision heading and geolocation system, an analog and digital data encoding and decoding system, and a multi-channel signal emission tracking and recording system.

Turkish plan against our islands in the Eastern Aegean

The Turks have been methodically and consistently, for at least a year, carrying out flights of unmanned aerial vehicles, with the aim of recording the Greek forces on the islands, (movements of forces, ships, guards, etc.) while also “mapping” the Greek air defense.

Thus, in case of any possible Turkish operation that many of our military units on the islands and Evros, we will have our own antidote to any Turkish provocation.

We remind you that the pile of Turkish UAV violations, combined with many incidents, have raised the alarm to the Greek general staff, about the intentions of the Turks, who are now openly questioning even the presence of Greek citizens on Greek islands.
