France’s Amiral Ronarc’ frigates may end up matching the capabilities of Greek FDI.
Since the launch in 2017 of the program of the five future defense and intervention (FDI) frigates of the French Navy, the level of armament and equipment of these 122-meter-tall and more than 4400 tons in cargo has been discussed.
If confirmed, this would be France’s first naval program to evolve since the start of the Ukraine War. It is recalled that France is to procure 5 FDIs before 2030 to replace the aging La Fayette class. They have been described as underarmed from the start, but funding has been limited.
An important parameter for the frigate case is raised by expert analyst Hugo Decis.
According to him, France should thank our country for something else!
“The Navy’s decision to procure up to 4 FDIs probably made it easier for Marine Nationale to state its own desire to see the capabilities of the Amiral Ronarc’h frigates upgraded. As a result, France’s Amiral Ronarc’ frigates may end up matching the potential of Greek FDI, making the French and Greek navies more interoperable and perhaps paving the way for more industrial cooperation in the future,” he comments.
