What more is required to deal with illegal immigration flows?

From Savvas D. Vlassis

Lately, there has been an increased pressure on the flows of illegal immigrants that the state-gang from the east is pushing towards Greece in an organized manner. The reports and images about the illegal entry of large numbers of illegal immigrants are worrying and causing disturbance at home as the public opinion is getting the impression of the inability of the competent agencies to manage the situation. This strong impression works negatively for the government, which is naturally blamed for any failure in dealing with any challenge related to national security. Thus, we recently saw the decision to extend the fence to the Evros, a perfectly rational initiative that should have been taken a long time ago.

The truth is that the government agencies have not relaxed the effort and thanks to the orders that exist, a similar or even greater number of people who enter the country illegally, even leave it the same day or the next day. The government has been forced to take action similar to that required by the particular circumstances of the attack that Turkey has chosen against Greece. However, additional multi-level interventions are needed.

Although, as mentioned above, certain measures are considered absolutely necessary, necessary and almost self-evident, for various reasons there is a lack of responsibility for their implementation. These are measures that in essence have no political cost, because basically they are in line with common sense and the feeling of 90% of the citizens of this country, who demand real security, the application of laws and the functioning of Justice. On the contrary, the government suffers a political cost from their non-implementation.

A security official involved in the management of the long-term crisis facing the country summarizes a short list of self-evident multi-layered measures that must someday be consistently implemented as part of national policy on the matter.

If disincentive policies are not implemented that will stop “magnetizing” flows, the waves of foaming are not going to be stopped, nor will the so-called humanitarian industry that turns over billions be shut down. It is necessary to stop any kind of facilitation, sense of security – lawlessness and of course benefits. It is perhaps the most basic factor that we are “anti-tourist”, that they do not prefer illegal entry from Greece but to go to other countries.

To erect the remaining part of the fence in Evros. Since the existing section has been confirmed to reduce the flows, there is no reason for any hesitation and delay in completing the rest. Of course, there may still be flows, for example from Bulgaria, but they will be much smaller and the staff will be able to deal with them much more easily.

Carrying out regular operations of the Hellenic Police over a long period of time in Athens. The capital has become a “safe haven”. On all the pages and channels of illegal immigrants, there is talk of the security provided by the Greek capital, in contrast to Thessaloniki where there is greater activity by the authorities. It is no coincidence that the channels that direct instructions to illegal immigrants point out the avoidance of Thessaloniki as a destination and the pursuit of landing in Athens, which is described as “safe”. A condition, however, is that the operations of ELAS are real and not for political expediency and appearance, as recently. As emphasized in (1), the purpose is to make the illegal immigrant feel “unsafe”, to not even think about coming to our country and if he succeeds, to want to leave immediately.

Scourge NGO. Operations, arrests and heavy penalties against members when they break the law. The same feeling of “uncertainty”, which must be cultivated in illegal immigrants. We want many “Alkmenes” with real results. Illegal immigrant flows are like water, they will move where there is least resistance.
