The presence of the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense, Antonis Oikonomou, at the anniversary commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the massacre of Italian prisoners of the Aqui Division by German occupation troops in Kefalonia

The Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defence, Antonis Oikonomourepresenting the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendiasattended today, Saturday, September 14, at the commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the massacre of approximately 8,000 Italian prisoners of the Aqui Division by the German Occupation troops, in Kefalonia.

Mr. Economou welcomed the Italian delegation headed by the Minister of Defense, Guido Grosseto. The events were also attended by the KETX Commander Brigadier General Evangelos Toundaswho represented the Greek Armed Forces, the Chief of the Italian Armed Forces Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragonethe Ambassador of Italy in Athens, Patricia Falcinellithe current Commander of the historic Division, as well as a delegation of the National Union of the Aqui Division, which also represented the relatives of the fallen Italians.

The Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense attended the memorial service and laid a wreath at the Fallen Memorial of the Akui Division, in Argostoli.

The event was attended by the Member of Parliament of Kefalonia and Ithaki Panagis Kappatosthe Deputy Governor of Kefalonia & Ithaca Stavros Travlosthe Mayor of Argostoli Theofilos Michalatosas well as representatives of local authorities.

Earlier, wreaths were laid at the Monument of the Greek National Resistance in Argostoli, but also at the place where the Italians of the Aqui Division were executed by the German troops in September 1943.
