This partnership demonstrates Australia’s commitment to building a dominant capability, a move that strengthens the country’s security infrastructure and boosts advanced manufacturing.
The Hon Pat Conroy MP, Minister for Defense Industry, highlighted the Australian Government’s commitment to promoting domestic munitions manufacturing. He said: “The Albanian government’s investment in these cutting-edge technologies demonstrates that we are meeting the recommendations of the Strategic Defense Review to develop advanced munitions manufacturing in Australia.”

Thales Australia’s contributions include directed production of weapons, propellants and explosives, solid propellant rocket manufacturing, and research and development and support services.
Jeff Connolly, CEO of Thales Australia and New Zealand, welcomed the investment, saying the move would “support the significant change in technology development and innovation necessary to continue to develop a highly skilled workforce and create advanced jobs in the construction sector of the future. .”
Thales Australia’s approach is highlighted by its 2021 investment of $6 million in advanced manufacturing equipmentt at the Commonwealth-owned Mulwala facility in regional New South Wales. This move allows for a 500% increase in the production capacity of rocket engines, a component in the construction of advanced guided and hypersonic weapons.
Thales Australia’s contribution to Australian defense extends to the management of Government Contractor Operated (GOCO) sites at Benalla, Victoria and Mulwala, New South Wales, employing over 650 staff. These sites play a role in the manufacture of ammunition systems for the ADF and allied forces.
Thales it also supplied the Bushmaster armored personnel carrier to the Australian Army and did so between 2004 and 2014. In total, 965 of the vehicles have been procured by Thales Australia in that period, according to GlobalData’s information on Australian defense market.
