When asked if he is worried about further tension between Greece and Turkey, he characteristically said: “I am worried about an episode in general with Turkey. Now, will it be in Cyprus, will it be in the Eastern Mediterranean, will it be in the Aegean? It is clear that at this stage Erdogan has his back against the wall due to the state of the economy and is trying to push a narrative inside Turkey of ‘we are back as an empire to things, we are coming back, we are regaining our old greatness’.

The average Turk sees his currency annihilated. For everyone to understand, what you used to buy with one Turkish lira, now you want 10 Turkish lira! Within four years. And wages have not increased. The world is in dire financial straits. This leads Erdogan to extreme thoughts.”

At the same time, Angelos Syrigos recalled the occasion of the completion of 100 years since the Asia Minor Disaster.

“An unfortunate coincidence”, the Deputy Minister of Education described this “black” anniversary with the current situation, speaking of “in any case, this particular month is rhetorically difficult”.

Also, Angelos Syrigos considers that the economy remains the “Achilles heel” of the neighboring country.
