Search and rescue operation of foreigners and arrest of their foreign traffickers in Kythira

A search and rescue operation for foreigners was carried out since the morning hours yesterday, in the sea area southeast of Kythira, under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center LS-EL.AKT.

In particular, the E.K.S.E.D./L.S.-EL.AKT., was informed by the European emergency call number “112”, to provide assistance to an I/F vessel with foreign passengers on board in the above Marine area.

The local emergency plan was immediately implemented and three (03) LS-EL.AKT patrol boats rushed to the area. and one (01) Coastal Patrol Vessel L.S.-EL.AKT., which spotted the US-flagged sailing vessel, with ninety foreigners on board (35 men, 18 women, 27 boys, 10 girls – nationalities of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan , Iraq and Egypt) and drove it to the port of Diakofti Kythera.

Afterwards, the above were transferred to the coastal patrol boat LS-EL.AKT. and were safely transported to the port of Neapolis Voion, yesterday evening.

As part of the preliminary investigation carried out by the Port Authority of Neapolis Voion, two foreigners among the ninety were arrested, for violation of laws 4251/2014 and 3386/2005, as they apply, as well as for violation of article 306 of the Civil Code, while the I/F vessel seized by the relevant Port Authority.
