While Hamas had 24 battalions, at this time the Israel Defense Forces have won decisive victories over most of the 14 Hamas battalions in Northern Gaza, excluding the four eastern battalions in Northern Gaza that avoided heavy casualties. Estimates of Hamas’ fighting forces include 20,000 soldiers, of which 5,000 constitute an elite core.

On the northern border, the casualty balance between Hezbollah and Israel stands at 76 Hezbollah soldiers to 7 IDF soldiers. Heyman warns that Hezbollah has a history of deterrence calculations that suggest further attacks against Israel are likely to bring closer casualty numbers between the two sides.
