The alarm has replaced the concern in the Greek “Pentagon” from the provocative overflights of Turkish UAV’s even in the night and midnight hours, as an uncontrollable situation is now beginning to emerge. It is typical that last week Turkish UAV’s flew over Greek islands a total of six times after midnight, four of them within 72 hours.

In fact, from the beginning of September until today, Turkish drones have carried out four more overflights late at night, that is, from 9 p.m. until midnight. In the vast majority of cases the Turkish UAV’s have flown over the island of Kinaro (it is between Amorgos and Leros), while some overflights have occurred over the island of Kandeliussa (west of Nisyros) and the island of Levitha which is near Kinaro. Essentially, it seems that the Turks have precisely planned the route of the overflights in this triangle of the islands of the Dodecanese Kandeliussa, Kinaros, Levitha.

According to information, the staff of the Ministry of Defense and the Greek Defense Ministry are trying to analyze this new phenomenon with the late-night and night overflights that is intensifying Turkey’s aggressive tactics in the Aegean with the systematic use of Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles. There is no concern for now. And this is because the Greek air defense and the radars detect the track of the UAV’s directly and in time. However, the top officers of the “Pentagon” wish to draw safe conclusions about the reason or reasons that have led Ankara to this form of challenges, since further escalation could create dangerous situations. However, this surge of night and late-night overflights began shortly after Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s crude threat that the Turks might come “suddenly one night”. Coincidence or a move of aggressive tactics by Ankara to show that what its officials say they do? The Turkish leadership knows the answer, but it is also one of the assessments they make at the “Pentagon”.

War of nerves

However, one possibility that is considered certain to be analyzed and evaluated by the “Pentagon” officers is that these overflights are part of the war of nerves, i.e. the hybrid-psychological war that Ankara has chosen for years with the violations in the Aegean. The Turks are well aware that violations and even more so their aircraft flights over Greek islands are not only recorded but have a great impact on the Greek media and society. Maybe that’s why they choose at no cost, now with dozens of UAV’s at their disposal, to provoke discussions in Greece and the feeling that they are… threatening us.

It should also be noted that at the tactical level these overflights late at night and in the specific area of the Dodecanese in Kinaro, Kandeliussa, Levitha, do not offer anything to Turkey. These islets have no military installations. But even if the Turks aimed to record, with the help of UAV’s, with photos and videos these islands, why do it again and again? It is also noted that in the past Turkish fighter jets or other aircraft have carried out violations and overflights in areas where Greek military exercises are in progress with the aim of harassing them. But in the recent night overflights by the UAV’s there was no exercise in the area.

A scenario that could not be ruled out, although far-fetched, is that UAV’s are used by Ankara’s leadership in an attempt to accuse Greece of push back tactics in the Aegean with migrants. We have seen everything from the Turkish… editor. Therefore, it is not improbable that a video taken from above, from a Turkish UAV – and of course no one will be able to certify the shooting point – will be released, showing an alleged push back episode with the Greek coast guard as the protagonist.
