According to the company Koç Bilgi ve Savunma Teknolojileri AŞ (KoçDefence) and the TÜBİTAK Advanced Information Technologies and Information Security Research Center (TÜBİTAK BİLGEM), the Turks have built a system that will connect Turkish submarines with the surface units of the Turkish Navy seamlessly and digitally, as mentioned in a related publication.
At the same time as part of the MELTEM-3 project, the fifth P-72 maritime patrol aircraft was delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces Command.
The deliveries of the aircraft continue according to the planning carried out by the Presidency of the Defense Industries, concludes a related announcement.
What is the new digital phone and what is the purpose of its existence in the Turkish Navy
The new generation D-Satel digital underwater telephone, developed by Koç Defense in cooperation with TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, is expected to be the connecting link of Turkish submarines with Corvettes, Frigates and the mini aircraft carrier “Anatolou”.
Bringing digitization to underwater communication, the Next Generation Digital Underwater Telephone (D-Satel) was unveiled at a special event.
D-Satel is expected to be used on the new frigates (TF-2000) and later on all warships of the Turkish Navy, starting with the MİLGEM class (6, 7 and 8).
Statements by the heads of the companies on the new communications system
Speaking at the meeting, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM President Ali Görçin said: “I believe that this cooperation between the public and private sectors will lead to new initiatives in this field by presenting modern achievements.
The conversion of experience and knowledge gained from underwater telephone development activities for surface ships and REIS-class submarines is unique.
D-Satel is an important asset for the competition of the Turkish defense industry in international markets.”
KoçSavunma Group President Erkut Tekinkaya pointed out that the Digital Underwater Telephone (D-Satel) is important in terms of promoting the level of digitization in the defense industry and said: “In addition to the existing capabilities of underwater telephone communication, the need to use various digital protocols will allow the exchange of short code messages, through a special digital platform.
The technology of Digital Underwater Telephone (D-Satel), will be developed in cooperation with TÜBİTAK BİLGEM and KoçSavunma, will integrate the existing systems. This provides a great advantage to the Turkish Navy”.
The contract for the development of Digital Underwater Telephone (D-Satel) was signed between KoçSavunma and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM on May 24, 2022.
The threats that a warship will now face at sea have multiplied and include UAVs, UCAVs, unmanned missile vessels, unmanned submarines, enemy vessels, anti-submarine helicopters and fighter jets.
All this together clearly threatens every surface unit in a future maritime battlefield, especially in the Mediterranean, in which the Turkish navy is now active.
The only thing that is certain is that the Turks with Three or even better Four BELHARA, in pairs for example in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, will lose their sleep, in combination with the Greek submarines “ghosts” TYPE-214, for many years, as digitally phones even if they put them in their submarines.
