The Russian guided-missile cruiser Varyag, currently in Mediterranean waters, blocked the US Navy’s aircraft carrier strike group in the Adriatic Sea, which was planning to leave the area. It was decided not to escalate the incident, as tensions between NATO and Russia were too serious and the risk of direct conflict too great. The Russian maneuver was a subtle challenge to NATO’s naval command that continued after July 22. However, it is noted that the Russian cruiser “Varyag” did not show any aggression.
