The Minister of Health Nikolaos Hardalias announced the concession of part of the former “KARATASIOU” Camp for the construction of the new Thessaloniki Oncology Hospital

The Deputy Minister of National Defense Mr. Nikolaos Hardalias announced today, Friday, July 1, 2022, the concession of a part of the former “KARATASIOU” Camp, to the Ministry of Health, for the construction of the new Oncology Hospital, during an information meeting held at the Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (Macedonia-Thrace), in Thessaloniki , in the presence of the Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Stavros Kalafatis and the General Secretary of Health Services Mr. Ioannis Kotsiopoulos.

After the meeting, the Deputy Minister of National Defense Nikolaos Hardalias stated:

It is with great pleasure that I am today pleased to announce the location of the new Oncology Hospital of Thessaloniki, on an area within the former “KARATASIOU” Camp, opposite the “PAPAGEORGIOU” Hospital and the 424th General Military Hospital, aspiring that this action of ours will soon constitute, the springboard for the creation of a model health park, for the whole of Northern Greece.

The new Oncology Hospital was a commitment of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, from the stage of the 85th Thessaloniki International Exhibition in September 2021, and it will now become a reality. The area of ​​the former “KARATASIOU” Camp, in the Municipality of Pavlos Melas, in western Thessaloniki, it ideally serves its optimal location, since the area offers easy access, networks and other necessary urban infrastructure, while at the same time it has sufficient parking space for vehicles, all employees and its visitors.

The new Anti-Cancer Unit, with its inclusion in the National Health System, will be a modern, pioneering and innovative structure, designed to operate based on all international health standards, while ensuring high-level medical and nursing services to patients with neoplastic diseases and malignant blood diseases, practically serving not only the residents of Thessaloniki, but patients from all over Northern Greece.

For its final location, all the co-competent Ministries of National Defence, Health, Environment & Energy, Interior (Macedonia-Thrace sector), Infrastructure & Transport and of course the National Defense Fund as the owner of the relevant area collaborated closely over a series of months, proposing social sensitivity and solidarity and of course the commitment of the entire Government to put our announcements into practice”.

The Deputy Minister of the Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Stavros Kalafatis, emphasized:

The first step towards the creation of a new Oncology Hospital in Thessaloniki is a fact. After persistent searches for a suitable space, the most suitable solution was found. I thank, among others, the National Defense Fund (NDF) for its offer. It was decided to create the new nursing institution in the former “KARATASIOU” Camp. The aging Theageneio, which contributed so much to Public Health, will be replaced by a state-of-the-art hospital, which will offer quality health services to thousands of people from Thessaloniki, Northern Greece and beyond. The commitment of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will come true.”
