The “beastly” M1117 of the Greek army shield Evros

The armored reconnaissance vehicles have joined the Army Units in Evros and further strengthen the country’s defense shield.

Video with actions of the Armed Forces in the area of Evros, was published today by GEETHA. The video also captures the operational tasks of the newly acquired armored wheeled reconnaissance vehicles of the Army M1117, which were granted free of charge to Greece through the US defense surplus program.

According to the plan of GEETHA, the immediate integration of the specific reconnaissance vehicles in the Army Units in Evros further strengthens the country’s defense shield.

As it is known, on April 29 and 30, 2022, the receipt of 130 Armored Wheeled Reconnaissance Vehicles (TTOA-ASV) M1117 took place in Thessaloniki. It was preceded in December 2021 by the receipt of another 44 vehicles.

The M-1117 weighs 13.4 tons and is 6 meters long, 2.6 meters wide and 2.6 meters high. The vehicle is powered by an 8.3-liter Cummins diesel engine that produces 260 horsepower, its maximum speed reaches about 100 kilometers per hour and its range exceeds 650 kilometers. It can carry five people, while the weapons it brought when moving for the US Army included a 12.7 mm machine gun and a 40 mm Mk.19 automatic grenade launcher.

The vehicles have an advanced shielding system, with a combination of ceramic materials exterior and strong anti-fracture coating, which offers protection against a 5 kg weight mine explosion as well as from an anti-tank rocket (RPG) shot. Thanks to the special “run flat” type tires, it is able to move even when fired.
