Swedish forces bolster defenses with Patria’s six-wheeled armored vehicles

Sweden’s cross-border cooperation

Sweden’s military has been upgraded with the arrival of Patria’s Pansarterrängbil 300, commonly known as a 6×6 armored vehicle. Built in Finland, these military vehicles have arrived in Sweden and their deployment marks a phase in the expansion of the Swedish Armed Forces in the country.

The deal between Sweden and the Finnish defense company Patria included the purchase of 20 6×6 armored vehicles. This move is in line with Sweden’s goal of meeting NATO’s defense spending target of 2% of gross domestic product.

Designed primarily for troop transport, the Patria 6×6 offers versatility for a variety of purposes, including command and control and ambulance duties.

“The Patria 6×6 APC is also a relatively new platform that can be customized to suit different mission profiles and requirements, further enhancing opportunities for upgrade programs down the line,” said Tristan Sauer, aerospace, defense and security analyst at GlobalData. .

The Livgardet regiment in Kungsängen, located near the Swedish capital of Stockholm, is to house several of these vehicles. Additionally, other locations further south in Sweden will see the deployment of these armored units.

The official handover ceremony, which took place at the Ground Combat School in Kvarn on October 26, 2023, symbolized the bond between the homeland and Sweden, underscoring their commitment to strengthening national security.

The global expansion of Patras

Sauer commented on why he is a valuable addition for Sweden. “The Patria 6×6 is a solid choice for the Swedish armed forces, as it is used by neighboring Baltic states and future NATO allies Finland, Latvia and Estonia, with Germany also moving to adopt it in some form,” he said. “This will facilitate joint training, operations and logistics in the region, while building deeper relationships between the defense industries of partner countries.

Patria’s 6×6 armored vehicles are no strangers to the Baltic region, with Finland and Latvia already benefiting from their military capabilities. Additionally, the adoption of Patria’s 6×6 vehicles in Germany’s Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS) program demonstrates their growing popularity and effectiveness internationally.

The fulfillment of the Swedish order by Patras demonstrates the advantages of cross-border cooperation, a key element of the joint CAVS initiative.

Mats Warstedt, senior vice president of Market Area Nordics at Patria, expressed his satisfaction with the arrival of the vehicles on Swedish soil: “We are happy to see the vehicles in operation on Swedish soil.”

With production based in Finland and contributions from Swedish industry, the Pansarterrängbil 300 serves as an example of the benefits of cooperation between nations. Sweden’s role as one of Patras’ export markets underlines the success of their collaboration.

In the last three quarters, Patria’s net sales rose to 487.9 million euros ($515.2 million) compared to 426.7 million euros in the same period last year, while operating profit stood at 36, 9 million euros, from 32.8 million euros.
