Sweden announces Ukraine’s largest military package to date

The Swedish government has announced that it will donate the largest package of military support to Ukraine worth Skr 7.1 billion ($684.4 million).

“Russia’s brutal, unjust and merciless war in Ukraine continues and Ukraine’s need for support remains enormous. This support package meets the priority needs of Ukraine,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement on February 20, 2024.

Among Sweden’s 15th package, there is a naval initiative that includes Combat Boat 90s, small and fast motor boats (G-boats) and underwater weapons.

The package also includes artillery ammunition, an anti-aircraft system, light anti-tank weapons, recoilless rifles, hand grenades, medical equipment, medical transport vehicles, food and financial support to bilateral and multilateral projects or funds. It also includes financial support to enable Ukraine to purchase more Combat Vehicles 90s (CV90s).

It is mainly managed through an additional corrective budget that also includes the funds for support package 14, including an additional Skr 700 million cost in this previous package. The corrective budget totals Skr 8.2 billion. The government will continue the financing of package 15 in the spring amending budget.

By these measures, Sweden’s total military support to Ukraine since Russia’s full invasion on February 24, 2022 amounts to Skr 30 billion.

However, it should be noted that the Swedish Ministry of Defense added that all this equipment, in the support package, is currently in use by the Swedish Armed Forces.

“[We] have estimated that a donation can be made if replacement purchases are made soon.”

Strengthening Ukraine’s defense strategy

The content of this package indicates the defense strategy of Ukraine, which the Ukrainian Supreme Commander of the Armed ForcesOleksandr Syrskyi, he recently stated:

“We have shifted from offensive actions to conducting defensive operations. Our operational objective is to exhaust the enemy, inflict maximum casualties using our fortifications, technical advantages, unmanned aviation, electronic warfare and maintaining prepared defense lines.”

In that vein, Sweden’s latest donation will bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts, as air defense assets and munitions will help maintain the force’s ability to withstand Russian airstrikes.

This has become even more important this week as the Institute for the Study of War He recently noted that Russian forces had “temporarily established limited and localized air superiority” during the final days of their activity in Avdiivka before the Ukrainian withdrawal.
