On October 25, 2023 under the coordination of the Head of the LS-EL.AKT. a large scale exercise to deal with a pollution incident was successfully carried out by the Directorate of Marine Environmental Protection (DI.P.THA.P) and the Central Port Authority of Elefsina under the name “IPPOKAMPOS VI 2023”.
The exercise took place in the sea area of the Gulf of Elefsina. Three (03) anti-fouling vessels of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard participated, more specifically PLS 413 (K.L/X Elefsinos), PLS 417 (K.L/X Lavriou) and PLS 420 (K.L/X Piraeus ). In addition, the patrol boats PLS 335 and PLS 108 (K.L/X Elefsina) also contributed to the above procedure.
A 450-meter-long dam was erected, which, according to the Exercise scenario, surrounded the sunken tanker. Oil skimmers and various anti-pollution equipment were also used from the Central Decontamination Materials Warehouse (KAWA) located in Elefsina, with the method of refueling from certain piers in the scenario.
The exercise had a positive outcome, highlighting the high readiness of the LS-EL.AKT executives, as well as the operational anti-pollution means available to the Corps.
The protection of the marine environment is an immediate priority for the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy.
