Saab secures multi-million dollar contract for Canada’s air defense

The Government of Canada awarded Saab a contract worth about C$227 million ($168 million) for the highly rated RBS 70 NG short-range air defense system.

The RBS 70 NG, known for its unparalleled laser beam guidance and auto-tracking technology, has gained recognition and a diverse clientele throughout Brazil, the Czech Republic and Latvia.

With deliveries to begin in 2024, the agreement marks a step toward modernizing Canada’s defense arsenal and enhancing its operational readiness on the global stage.

The decision to select Saab’s RBS 70 NG followed a competitive procurement process where the Swedish defense giant emerged as the preferred vendor to fulfill Canada’s operational requirements under the Soldier Portable Air Defense System program. Designed to provide air defense support to the Canadian Armed Forces, the RBS 70 NG will play a role in supporting Canada’s enhanced presence in Latvia, thereby strengthening NATO’s collective defense posture in the region.
