Rapid developments: In a “vacuum” the purchase and upgrade of Turkish F-16s from the USA – “Vertigo” in Ankara – “No jets for Turkey” and with an amendment by Congress

It seems that the Turkish air force has fallen into complete “wandering” after the latest developments that show the Greek hawks moving at “supersonic” speeds while Ankara is struggling to cover the big gap. The air supremacy of the HAF is not only now assured, but everything shows that in the next period the gap is expected to widen even more, culminating in the acquisition of the F-35 Stealth fighters.

The article of the international prestigious Forbes which underlines that even if the Turkish air force finally succeeds in buying from the USA the 40 F-16 fighters and upgrades another 80, the Greek “wings” retain the advantage is indicative.

A superiority that cannot be changed even if the TuAF is reinforced with Typhoon Eurofighters. “‘Even if both agreements are implemented, the Greek Air Force will continue to have the technological advantage over the larger Turkish Air Force,'” the article states, while the conclusion is a nightmare for the neighbors. Whatever happens, Turkey will have difficulty overcoming the substantial technological superiority that the Hellenic Air Force will probably have achieved by 2030. Even if Turkey buys a squadron or two of Eurofighters plus modernized F-16s, again the Hellenic Air Force will have the technological advantage.

Faced with this grim reality for the TuAF, Ankara is fighting to get the US to buy new fighters and modernize 80 F-16s. Mevlut Cavusoglu’s statements today are typical. “At the moment we do not see a negative picture. There are various lobbies, like the Greeks who say “don’t sell these fighters”. As Mitsotakis in the congress made a speech against Turkey in a spirit that does not befit an allied country, undermining himself and begging that the fighters not be given to Turkey.

The head of Turkish diplomacy may be trying to create a positive atmosphere, but the latest information from the US indicates that “No jets for Turkey” is constantly gaining ground and threatens to “overturn” the Turkish plan to restore its air force. The amendment already circulating in Congress that links the sale of weapons systems to NATO members with the threat of violating Allied Sovereignty will be a “tombstone” to Ankara’s dreams.

At the same time, the Greek LOR for the F-35 is already in the office of the State Department responsible for the armament programs, with the process having already taken its course and Athens is pressing for a short answer. Until then, it is not excluded, as Newpost reports, that a group of Americans from the JPO will visit Greece once more in order to cooperate with our Air Force. However, the Air Staff is already working on the Stealth fighter project with the first request being the Air Base which will be the “nest” of the Greek F-35s.
