The Minister of National Defense Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos attended today, Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the celebrations held in Thassos on the occasion of the completion of 110 years since the Liberation of the island.
The Minister of National Defense attended the Doxology at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos Limanos Thassos, where the day’s eulogy was delivered. He then attended the Memorial Service, watched the parade and laid a wreath at the Fallen Hero.
Present at the events was the US Ambassador Mr. George Tsouniswhile parliamentarians, representatives of the Regional and Local Self-Government, as well as representatives of social organizations also attended.
After the parade, the Minister of National Defense made the following statement:
“I want to express my joy that together with the Authorities of the place, we are here today, on a brilliant day where Thassos, with brilliance, put its best foot forward and celebrated the Anniversary of its Liberation from the Ottoman yoke, its Liberation from Powers of the Greek Navy 110 years ago. When Greece was growing up, it won great National Victories and relied on powerful Armed Forces and a Navy that dominated the Aegean Sea.
Our ambition even today is to strengthen Greece militarily, not to make expansionary moves but to fully defend its National Sovereignty and its National Rights. But apart from the constant effort to strengthen the Armed Forces, the presence of our friends also counts a lot, and when I say friends I mean our Allies and Partners in the camp to which we belong, in the Western world, in the European Union, in NATO.
I think that today especially, the fact that the Ambassador of the United States to Greece, Mr. George Tsounis, also brightened today’s holiday with his presence. A high-ranking official of Greek origin as a representative today, here in Thassos, of the American Government also signals a message: Not only that he was fascinated by the island and as he told us he intends to come here to vacation in the future, but also that for those ignorant, I would say, they have even added Thassos – they dared to do even this – to the list of their claims, the presence here of the Ambassador of the United States and therefore the official Representative of our Allies, the American Government, I think sends a very clear message that everyone should take into account.
Happy birthday to Thassos.”
In his statement, the US Ambassador in Athens K. George Tsounis pointed out the following:
“It is a great pleasure for me to be in Thassos and to enjoy this anniversary. I am very honored to be invited, it is something special for me and I look forward to returning next year.
