“Happy New Year, with best wishes for those who bear the name of Myroblitos Agios Dimitrios. I would also like to say that the anniversary of the Liberation of Thessaloniki from the victorious spears of the Greek Army, is always an important day.
Thessaloniki is the capital city of the Balkans. It encapsulates, has integrated, the most important spiritual currents of Greece and the Peninsula, especially the very important spiritual edifice of the late Byzantine period. In this sense, Thessaloniki has a bright future in the 21st century, and today, on Saint Demetrius’ Day, I wish precisely for this bright future.
Before the Doxology, the Minister of National Defense had a meeting with his counterpart from the Republic of Cyprus Michalis Giorgallawho is in Thessaloniki for the celebration of October 26 and 28.
After the meeting, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Interior, responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Stathis KonstantinidisMr. Dendias stated:
“I had the great pleasure today, on Saint Demetrius’ Day, to welcome here in Thessaloniki, together with the Deputy Minister of Interior for Macedonia and Thrace, my friend the Minister of Defense of Cyprus.
It was very important and very interesting that we had the opportunity to review the conditions in our wider region.
As you know, Greece as well as Cyprus, we are on the edge of the new crisis in the Middle East. So you realize that there are very important issues that need to be discussed and about which there needs to be a common understanding and a mutual understanding.
We look forward with hope that this crisis can be dealt with in the best possible way.
I would like to repeat that Greece has also paid lip service of the Prime Minister a clear position on the new crisis in the Middle East. Terrorism, terrorist attacks, massacres of civilians cannot be tolerated.
And we have also consistently said that Hamas’s attack on Israel, and especially on Israeli civilians, serves the Palestinian cause and the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people in the worst possible way.
Again, Michalis, I was very happy to see you today in Thessaloniki and I expect to see you soon in Athens.”
Finally, the Minister of National Defense sat at the lunch hosted by the 3rd Army Corps, at the Guard Officers’ Club of Thessaloniki, in honor of the President of the Republic.
