Poland inaugurates its new Abrams regional facility

Poland has announced the opening of its new “Regional Competency Center” for the Abrams main battle tank (MBT) family in Poznań, western Poland.

The facility will serve as a regional hub to maintain and maintain the platform for Abrams users in central and regional Europe.

It is ideally located in a country that will soon introduce the MBT and is relatively close to the war in Ukraine – in January 2023, the US government announced the supply of 31 M1A2 Abrams tank vehicles to Ukraine.

In particular, the “V-Corps” of the US Army is located in Poznan. This military unit serves as the tactical headquarters commanding all US forces on NATO’s eastern flank. The unit is currently headed by Polish Major General Maciej Jablonski.

Poland’s armaments group, PGZ, had initially signed an agreement with US manufacturer Abrams, General Dynamics Land Systemsto set up this new Competence Center at the end of June last year.

From GlobalData

In April last year, the Polish Government revealed that the US has confirmed that the first 14 modern M1 Abrams tanks will be delivered to the military in June 2023 – this is part of the 366 units ordered. acquired by Poland the M1A1 version for its 18th Mechanized Division, as well as the M1A2 SEPv3 tanks already contracted in April 2022.

The new Competency facility was created largely in response to this order for the chariot.

However, in addition to Poland, other local customers have also requested the MBT, including Romania, which ordered 54 M1A2 SEPv3 units in November 2023.

Plans for the evolution of the Abrams tank

The Abrams tank can no longer develop its capabilities without adding weight, and we need to reduce its logistical footprint,” explained Lt. Gen. Glenn Dean, program executive officer for ground combat systems.

Therefore, the US military plans to significantly reduce its weight and therefore its maintainability through an open system architecture.

At the same time, the enduring SEPv3 variant will continue to play a role in the force structure as the most viable version of the Abrams tank.

“Support must be provided to the military in terms of service, operation and maintenance of every type of equipment it has in its inventory,” said PGZ board vice president Krzysztof Sola.

“I would like to thank the representatives of General Dynamics Land Systems, as well as the management board of Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne and the employees of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa for the fact that together we managed to implement this project in such a short time,” Sola emphasized.
