Participation of Mr. A/L.S.-EL.AKT. at the 3rd World Coast Guard Summit

The Chief of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard Vice Admiral L.S.-EL.AKT. Georgios Alexandrakis participated in the 3rd Global Coast Guard Summit, which was organized by the Japan Coast Guard with the support of the Nippon Foundation in Tokyo, from October 30 to November 1, 2023.

The Summit was attended by the leaders and high-ranking representatives from almost all the states of the world that perform coast guard functions of all kinds, as well as representatives of International and European organizations with relevant responsibilities in the maritime field (e.g. IMO, EMSA, Frontex, EFCA, ReCAAP).

The World Coast Guard Summit seeks to create a functional network of coast guard services aimed at developing member capacities, sharing experiences and best practices, analyzing current and future challenges for coast guards, and providing training opportunities.

Discussions focused on the challenges associated with the introduction of new technologies, focusing on autonomous and semi-autonomous surface and underwater vessels, the operational management of maritime migration, initiatives to counter piracy and armed robbery, the demonstration of new surveillance capabilities, and analyzing best practices related to dealing with emergency situations, such as the recent coronavirus pandemic.

Institutional issues of the functioning of the Synod were also examined, in order to respond to the modern operational needs of the Coast Guards, and the conditions of its operation were revised accordingly. It was also decided (a) the development of a training program for coast guard operations, which will be developed gradually and mainly online, and (b) the development of a website of the World Coast Guard Council that will consist of a public domain as well as a domain that will concern the members of the Council.

The Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard is a founding member and participates actively and constructively in all collaborative formations of Coast Guard operations, such as the European Forum, the Mediterranean Forum and now also in the World Summit.

On the occasion of his participation in the Synod, the Head of LS-EL.AKT. Vice Admiral L.S. Alexandrakis Georgios, said: “The World Summit is the unique opportunity to communicate and get to know counterparts and distinguished colleagues coastguards-portmen from all over the world. Everyone comes with their experiences and the challenges they face in their daily lives, some common and some unique to their marine area of ​​responsibility. However, all of us together can, through the collaborative actions that are developed and will be developed in the context of the World Summit, improve our knowledge and our operational skills, with one goal in mind, to carry out our mission more effectively, always in the context of the national and international of law.”
