PRESS RELEASE
Operation of the Athens Security Sub-Directorate to deal with wallet thefts in the wider area of the center of Athens
A total of -5- people were arrested
From the Athens Security Sub-Directorate of the Attica Security Directorate, a police operation was carried out to deal with the theft of wallets, in the wider area of the center of Athens.
A total of five (5) foreigners were arrested, for cases of theft and attempted theft, while indictments were filed against them for – as the case may be – theft and attempted theft with complicity and accepting and disposing of proceeds of crime.
It was preceded by a mapping of the activity of people who were systematically active in the theft of wallets in the area of the historical commercial center of Athens (Plaka, Anafiotika, Monastiraki, Syntagma, etc.).
As it turned out, the arrested working as groups, coming to Greece and staying in hotels in the center of Athens, acted purposefully committing thefts of wallets and other valuables, mainly from tourists.
To achieve their goal, they dressed as tourists while committing thefts, holding maps, purses, autoguide, etc., while constantly changing accommodations (hotels, airbnb, etc.) to avoid detection. In addition, they were in possession of items of clothing that were alternated making it difficult to identify and target them.
From the searches carried out in hotel rooms where they were staying – among others – were found and confiscated:
-3,425- euros,
-110- British pounds,
grater,
-3- one dollar bills,
wallet,
-2- passports,
eight stone earring,
a pair of earrings,
clock and
-3- tourist maps.
The arrested were taken to the competent Prosecutor.
