NATO: Absolutely illegal annexation of territories by Russia, the territories are Ukrainian

Jens Stoltenberg gives a press conference after the announcement of the annexation of four territories of Ukraine by Russia

Alliance Secretary General made it clear that all its members would have to agree on Ukraine’s accession – Condemned Moscow’s annexation of the four regions

“Our door is open to all EU countries” the Secretary General of NATO emphasized in an emergency press conference, shortly after Kiev’s official request for rapid accession to the Alliance.

The NATO Secretary-General essentially referred Ukraine to the decisions of last June’s Summit in Madrid, stressing that Kiev’s request will be considered and should be accepted by all member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.

“NATO supports the right of all countries to apply for membership in the Alliance and always keeps the door open to Ukraine, as we have stated in the past,” he said. “We support Ukraine’s right to determine its own path. Our aim now is to provide support to Ukraine to repel Russia’s barbaric attack.”

He further stated that the Allies have declared and demonstrated their support for Ukraine and together they will decide the country’s path towards membership, as they did with Sweden and Finland at the NATO Summit in Madrid.

At the same time, he repeated many times in his statements that this war is not between NATO and Russia, but between Russia and Ukraine, making it clear that it is up to Putin to stop the conflict. He specifically called on him to immediately stop the war and confirmed support for Ukraine “for as long as necessary”. “Ukraine has an absolute right to take back its territories and we will support it,” he said.

He also condemned the annexation of the four regions of Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson – by Russia. Characteristically, he spoke of a move that betrays Putin’s failure, while he did not fail to repeat the support of the international community to the Ukrainian people.

The General Secretary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization described the annexation of “European territories” by Russia as illegal and noted that it is the biggest escalation of the war since its beginning last February.

Regarding threats to use nuclear weapons from the Russian side, Stoltenberg described them as “particularly worrying”, while warning that the use of such weapons would have significant consequences for Russia as well.
