Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolaos Hardalias with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria Dragomir Zakov

The Deputy Minister of National Defense, Mr. Nikolaos Hardaliasrepresenting the Minister Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulosreceived today, Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Ministry of National Defense, the Minister of Defense of Bulgaria Mr. Dragomir Zakovin the context of his official visit to Athens.

Present at the welcoming ceremony was the Deputy Chief of GEETHA Rear Admiral Ioannis Drymousis PN, the Chief of General Staff Rear Admiral Stylianos Petrakis ΠΝ, the Chief of GEA Vice Admiral (Ι) Themistoklis Bourolias and the Deputy Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General George Kellis.

During the talks, which took place in a cordial atmosphere in the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Conference Room, it was emphasized that Greece and Bulgaria have a strong and long-standing friendship, are close partners in the EU and NATO allies, and share the same vision, values ​​and perspective for and prosperity in our wider region. The two countries have been pioneers in regional cooperation initiatives and strongly support the European perspective and the European future of all their neighboring countries.

At the meeting, it was agreed to further strengthen bilateral defense cooperation.

As for Ukraine, it was stressed that the Russian invasion undermines the security and stability of Europe and expressed the unwavering commitment of the two countries to support Ukraine in every possible way.

It was also stressed that the review actions are a major threat to Euro-Atlantic security and a clear violation of international law and the fundamental principles on which the European security architecture is based.

The security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean was discussed, where tensions have recently increased due to provocations and unilateral actions against Greece, in violation of international law.

The Deputy Minister of National Defense underlined that Greece, as an ally of Bulgaria, will contribute to the Bulgarian battle group an anti-tank squad. In addition, it will participate in NATO early warning activities with an airborne early warning and control system aircraft, which will operate in areas of the Bulgarian FIR.

Finally, Mr. Hardalias stressed the importance of expanding NATO’s pipeline system to transport fuel from the port of Alexandroupolis to Bulgaria and Romania.
