On Thursday, December 21, 2023, the swearing-in ceremony of the first-year Evelpidians of the Class of 2027 “Lieutenant General Nikolaos Katoundas” took place at the Evelpidon Military School (SSE) in Vari, Attica.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of the Vice President of the Parliament Mr. Athanasios Bouras as the representative of the President of the Parliament, the Chief of the General Staff of the National Defense General Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of the General Staff of the Army Lieutenant General Angelos Houdeloudis and the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the National Guard Lieutenant General Loukas Chatzimihail as the representative of the Chief of the Defense Forces.
The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor of Vari, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Mr. Grigorios Constantellos, the Metropolitan of Glyfada, Hellinikon, Voula, Vouliagmeni & Vari, etc. Antonios, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Greece Mr. Stavros Augustidis, the Chief GEA Vice Admiral (I) Themistocles Bourolias, the Chief of General Staff Vice-Admiral Ioannis Drymousis PN, Honorary Chiefs of General Staff, the Members of the Supreme Military Council and the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic Police (HELP) Lieutenant General Georgios Douvalis as the representative of the Chief of Hellenic Police.
Also present were representatives of the Local Government, Officers of the Armed Forces and Security Forces, Defense Entourages and Military Entourages of Foreign Countries, delegations of Officers from Armenia and Serbia, retired Officers, academic authorities, relatives of the Hero of Class 2027 “Lieutenant General Nikolaos Katunda”, as well as the relatives of the sworn first-year Evelpids.
The swearing-in of first-year students is a day of honor and celebration for the School and their oath is the beginning of a new journey, as was also pointed out in the Order of the Day of the School Commander Major General Anastasios Polychronos and he urged them to feel proud, as they officially become members of the family of the School of Hope, a School with special weight, honored history and unparalleled contribution to the Motherland.
A total of 199 First Year Evelpides were sworn in, of which 168 from Greece, 21 from Cyprus, 1 from Albania, 3 from Armenia, 2 from Jordan, 2 from Senegal and 2 from Tunisia.
After the swearing-in ceremony, the Ili Ippikou paraded for the first time with 12 horsemen, who wore traditional historical uniforms of the Cavalry of the Hellenic Army.
Biography of Lieutenant General Nikolaos Katoudas
He was born in Patras on January 11, 1943. He graduated from the Evelpidon Military School in 1967. He was a graduate of the Law School of the University of Athens. In September 1973 he was transferred to Cyprus in the 33rd Assault Squadron as Commander of the 31st Assault Company in Kyrenia. On August 5, 1974, he was awarded the Medal of Valor, because as the Commander of the 31st Assault Company of the 33rd Commando Squadron on the night of July 20/21, 1974, he quietly entered as the leader of his Company to the rear of the enemy location and captured the objective assigned to his Company. On July 22, 1974, during the Squadron’s operation in Agios Georgios, Kyrenia, he fought heroically, having previously succeeded in neutralizing a significant number of enemy tanks. He has been missing since July 1974. By Presidential Decree of December 12, 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
