Imprisonment of the German soldiers who lowered the Greek flag and raised the German flag

In Chania, two German soldiers were sentenced to prison terms of six months and 10 months, respectively.

In April 2019, they had taken down the Greek flag and raised the German flag in its place, in the area of Stavros.

The two Germans were convicted by the automatic procedure and have been dismissed from their service, while today the case was heard in the second degree, in the three-member minor court of Chania.

The court imposed on one of them, who was represented by his lawyer, a suspended prison sentence of 6 months and on the second one he maintained the sentence of 10 months, as in the first instance.

As they had argued then during their apology, in their excitement at having reached the top of the point, they lowered the Greek flag and raised the German one, but without – as they said – seeking with this act to offend or desecrate the Greek symbol and declared regret.
