HII to develop an air defense system against ballistic missile threats

The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has contracted HII’s Mission Technologies division, an integrated solutions provider, to $79 million deal to develop, test and deploy a future missile defense system that will protect the US and its allies from ballistic missile threats.

The HII team will support MDA leadership on strategic, technical, programmatic, operational, policy and organizational issues related to the integrated, multi-layered missile defense system.

“Rogue state adversaries such as North Korea and Iran are pursuing dangerous capabilities, including long-range ballistic missiles that can threaten the U.S. homeland, support regional aggression, and deter potential U.S. responses,” Ministry of Defense declare yourself

The contract has a performance term of seven years on a two-year basis. The play will be presented at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Huntsville, Alabama; and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Due to the versatility of today’s interceptors and missile defense systems, particularly the increasing level of interoperability between theater and tactical-level missile defense solutions, one could argue that there is no longer a category of “theater-specific” missile defense systems.

Multi-layered defense uses multiple types of interceptors to target an incoming weapon at multiple points in its trajectory to increase the overall effectiveness of the system.

The multi-layered missile defense technology developed, tested and deployed by the US is designed to counter missiles in all phases of flight.

The HII system must consider emerging missile technologies

Currently, pan-European missile supplier MBDA has developed it Spear Electronic Warfare (EW) missile, which performs the suppression of enemy air defense missions.

The use of a next-generation miniature EW payload provides stand-in jammer and decoy capabilities to limit the missile defense response to complementary missile threats.

Similarly, hypersonic missiles are another emerging area that tests the responsiveness of missile defense systems.

They retain several advantages in terms of maneuverability (ability to maneuver almost up to the moment of impact, complicating interception). speed (significantly reduces defensive reaction times). and kinetic energy (the kinetic force generated by supersonic speed enhances destructive power and reduces payload weight requirements).
