M. Varvitsiotis: Under the coordination of the Coast Guard, 3,700 people were freed in Rhodes
The evacuation operation of 19,000 people that took place in Rhodes was the largest that has ever taken place in the country. The Coast Guard played a huge role in the rescue of approximately 3,700 people with the assistance of over 50 private and commercial vessels.
This was emphasized by the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis speaking today on ANT1 television and on the show “Summer Together” with journalists Nikos Rogakos and George Grigoriadis.
In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis emphasized the fact that the rescues, which took place mainly at night by sea, took place without any accident or injury and noted that the main concern at the moment is to put out the fires on the island of Rhodes once and for all.
In a question about the prices of the ferry tickets, the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy pointed out that compared to the initial prices today there is an average reduction of 20% and that certain companies that initially had not responded to the public sentiment, came back with more substantial discounts.
