Heavy fighting between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the border

Kyrgyzstan’s border service reported “intense fighting” with neighboring Tajikistan on Friday and said it saw additional Tajik forces and equipment being moved across the border.

In a statement, the border service said its forces continued to repel Tajik attacks.

Both countries have accused each other of resuming fighting in a disputed area despite a ceasefire agreement, Reuters reported.

Separately, the head of Kyrgyzstan’s state national security committee said, according to Russian news agency Ria Novosti, that military casualties were high.

The inhabitants of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz) are Turkic and Tajikistan (Tajiks) are Iranian.
