Behind the immigrants in Evros was the Turkish gendarmerie, the former head of the GES, and former commander of the 4th Corps of the Evros Army, general e.a. Georgios Kampas, speaking of a “hybrid threat”.
“They tried to create a challenge in order to expose us that we are not correct in our behavior towards immigrants, something that is false,” pointed out Georgios Kampas.
The retired officer commented that migration has been instrumentalized by Turkey, stating that in the Evros there are many disputed islets after the 1926 carving which were created over time east or west of the middle river and did not exist then.
“There are many islets that arise and disappear according to the seasons and the time, so they boarded one of these unfortunate people to cross…
“Until 2016, there was a joint Greek-tourist committee that decided on these issues, this time unfortunately this has been discontinued,” he noted.
