China: Xi Jinping puts the country on war alert – Global concern

China will fully strengthen its military training and preparation for any war, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

China’s security is increasingly unstable and uncertain, Xi was quoted as saying, as reported by Reuters.

China, which has the world’s second-largest economy and military, has repeatedly threatened to annex Taiwan by force if necessary, while Joe Biden recently pledged that the US would defend the island.

Taiwan is effectively an independent country, although not recognized internationally, but any moves towards full independence will almost certainly lead to war.

Last month, the Chinese Communist Party made an important addition to its Constitution regarding “resolute opposition to and prevention of Taiwan’s independence” and “resolute implementation of the one country, two systems policy.”

The US has responded to China’s threats to attack Taiwan by announcing it will deploy nuclear-capable bombers to Australia – in a bid to “warn” China of the “worst war in modern history”.

Experts say Xi’s comments are “extremely worrying” and the West should “take him seriously” and use all necessary means to prevent the Chinese leader from invading Taiwan.

The Chinese president’s post comes after he called last month for faster military development, technological “reliance and reinforcement” to defend China’s interests abroad, raising the possibility of further conflict.

So far, there have been no official reactions from Washington or the European Union, with the Chinese president’s statement under evaluation.

Dr Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society human rights group in London, told the Daily Mail: “Comments like this from Xi Jinping are extremely worrying.”

“For years, Xi has stepped up his rhetoric about using military force to reunite Taiwan with mainland China, and the West has done very little in response. Liberal Democrats must now take him at his word and work collectively, using all means necessary, to prevent Xi from invading Taiwan.”

“As a priority, Western nations must begin the process of eliminating all Chinese influence from critical industries such as energy, water and nuclear power,” Mendoza added.
