The goals and strategy of the Ministry of National Defense for 2024

2023 was a year of rapid geopolitical developments, necessitating a comprehensive re-evaluation of Greece’s defense strategy in a number of areas.
This new and reforming approach is based on the following axes:

National security policy update.

The updated national security policy focuses, among other things, in combination with the lessons of modern conflicts, on technological developments and emerging threats, such as cyber-attacks and threats against information systems. In addition, the holistic approach to national security policy integrates addressing a wider range of non-“traditional” threats, such as the challenges of climate change, by strengthening Greece’s ability to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies.

Reinforcement of Defense Diplomacy

For the Ministry of National Defense, defense diplomacy is a key factor in strengthening the country’s security, through the expansion of its alliances and defense partnerships. In this direction, the goal is to – with even greater frequency – exchange contacts with my counterparts, to strengthen participation in international peacekeeping missions, as well as to conduct bilateral and multilateral military exercises. All of the above are, among other things, means to create deep understanding and cooperation with countries that share the same understanding of International Law.

Implementation of equipment programs

The smooth implementation of the ongoing armament programs is one of the major goals of 2024. The acquisition of FDI frigates and Rafale aircraft, as well as the modernization of the F-16s, are upgrading the country’s defense capabilities. However, our planning must be long-term, serve an effective defense strategy and not mortgage the national economy. For these reasons, the re-evaluation and prioritization of our future equipment programs is necessary.

Revitalizing the defense industry and strengthening Innovation and Technology Development

2024 will be a year of transformation for the Greek defense industry, with the establishment of the Hellenic Center for Defense Research and Innovation Development. The Center will focus on mobilizing resources and international collaborations to advance research and technology development. The attempt to restructure the Greek Aviation Industry, the supervision of which has already passed to the Ministry of National Defence, could not be missing from the overall revitalization of the defense industry.

Improvement of the living conditions of the executives and changes in tenure

In the initiatives to improve the quality of life of the members of the Armed Forces, we are implementing the construction of 1,400 homes, with an emphasis on areas with a high cost of living, such as the Aegean islands. In addition, the Ministry is developing the “Term – Opportunity” Program to strengthen the skills of conscripts. The program includes the development of digital skills and certified vocational training of conscripts, in specialties that will help them find work after their service.
