Abdulhamid Han: Why Erdogan backfired – The message he received that “Greece will strike”

How the diplomatic mobility of Athens and the operational readiness of the Armed Forces act as a wall against Turkish revisionism – “A war won is the one that is not fought”, a top source from the Greek “Pentagon” meaningfully tells Newsbomb.gr, pointing out that the correct choices of the political and military leadership bring results and prevent dangerous situations for the Greek people.

Tayyip Erdoğan’s decision not to send the Turkish research vessel Abdulhamid Han to the Cypriot EEZ or the Greek continental shelf seems to be leading to calm waters for the time being in Greek-Turkish relations as well.

For a long time now, we have been emphasizing that the provocative and extreme rhetoric of the Turkish regime is not consistent with their mobility in the field, with Ankara now appearing to have received certain messages that both Athens and the West have sent out.

The Turkish president this time turned his back on the nationalist voices and the supporters of the famous “Blue homeland”, choosing to show the international community a mood of self-restraint.

But how did he come to this decision? Why did he listen to the interlocutors who advised him not to escalate the tension at this time and avoid the “gray wolves” who co-rule?

First of all, the messages that the Turkish regime had received from the West recently were many… USA, Germany, France, were calling on Tayyip Erdoğan to avoid tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, for fear of a serious rift in the south-eastern wing of NATO and especially in this critical period. The changes brought about by the war in Ukraine to the geopolitical chessboard now impose a clean stance, with NATO regrouping and strengthening, making it clear to all its members that destabilizing behavior cannot be accepted, no matter how important the ally.

Also, after the war in Ukraine, revisionism and its pernicious consequences are now viewed differently by Europe, with aggressive actions now recognized and condemned even by Turkey-friendly countries. Indicative is the position of the German foreign minister, Analena Berbock, during her visit to Turkey, who explained to her irritated Turkish counterpart that the questioning of sovereignty cannot be tolerated.

The decisive movements of Greece

In the aggressive crescendo of the Turks in recent years, Greece responded with composure and determination. Without… begging for protection from major powers, as was done for decades and then thanking them for their intervention, Greece contrasted Turkish revisionism with diplomatic mobility and the operational readiness of the Armed Forces.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense took care to publicize at all forums Turkey’s aggressive actions and its destabilizing role in the region, while at the same time the establishment of strong alliances, in bilateral, tripartite or even quadripartite formats, created pillars of stability and security in the wider region region of the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Furthermore, the crisis of 2020 acted as a “wake-up call” for the Armed Forces, with the Minister of Defense Mr. Nikos Panagiotopoulos, the Chief of Defense Forces, General Konstantinos Floros and the Heads of the Branches formulating an armament plan that maximizes the deterrent power our country. At the same time, the determination on the field in the Ebro, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, sent a message to Ankara that Greece is neither Syria, nor Libya, nor Armenia to play with. It has a mighty Armed Forces, more ready and more determined than ever.

This they made sure to communicate to political and military leadership in all directions, so that the message would reach the presidential palace and Erdoğan’s ear. “Greece is ready for everything. He will not hesitate to strike”, said European and American officials to the officials of the Turkish regime, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, the Minister of Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, the Chief of Defense Forces, General Konstantinos Floros and the Prime Minister himself, Kyriakos Mitsotakis they left no challenge unanswered.

So the messages were many and loud for Tayyip Erdogan to ignore. The Turkish president is not stupid, he knows where and when to take him to do pranks and pranks. So at the moment, not only is he not getting it, but there is a risk that in the event of a conflict, Turkey will be taken back to the 19th century by the destruction it will suffer.
